  • Now the pair is in a heated argument over who gets to use the living room

Everyone deserves a little personal time, especially after the holiday season — but sharing a living space with a partner while both trying to work and relax can sometimes lead to unexpected tensions.

A recent Reddit post highlighted just how tricky balancing work-from-home schedules and personal downtime can become.

The post came from a user who works from home permanently, while their girlfriend primarily works in an office but occasionally works from home. They explained that when she works from home, she uses the living room as her workspace.

“We’ve both been off over Christmas and new year and we’re both supposed to go back on Friday,” they shared. “I put 2 extra days of annual leave in so I don’t go back until the 6th.”

Their plan was simple: “use the day to myself to relax at home and play video games and catch up on Netflix since I’ve got the place to myself.”

Yet, tension arose when their girlfriend requested to work from home on the Friday they had planned for themselves.

When they suggested she could use their home office instead of the living room, she responded, “I prefer the living room and don’t want you using the TV since it’ll make noise and she can’t work when it’s noisy.”

The disagreement escalated, with the poster pointing out that “she has the home office [or] her actual office to work in if she doesn’t want noise” and stated that they would “still be using the living room.”

The Reddit user emphasized that they weren’t preventing her from working; rather, they just didn’t want to give up their planned day off.

Their girlfriend maintained that she wasn’t asking for much, but they held firm, saying they wouldn’t cancel their personal plans for the sake of her preference.

Commenters largely sided with the original poster, describing the girlfriend as “selfish” and accusing her of purposefully trying to ruin their days off.

“It’s a living room. A room specifically for living. She took the days to WFH then she can work in the office. That’s not fair to you,” one user wrote. “What are you supposed to do while she’s working? Just sit there and be quiet? Not fair.”

One user even labeled her “inflexible, controlling and selfish,” highlighting that she had two quiet spaces to work in, and the living room wasn’t one of them.
