8 Pro Organizer-Approved Amazon Home Office Finds

Before I started working from home in 2018, I went to an office every day where I had a desk and access to all of the office supplies. When I switched to working remotely, I quickly realized that I needed to completely change my organization habits in order to prevent clutter from overtaking my desk.

Years later, I have a system that works for me (or so I thought). But after chatting with Charleston, South Carolina-based professional organizer Jennings C. King, the owner and founder of Space Maker Professional, I’ve realized my work-from-home space and routine still leaves a lot to be desired. So, let’s dive into how to get your office, your computer, and your daily schedule into tip-top shape with King’s expert advice and her go-to Amazon products.

The Problem

Whenever I’m trying to solve a problem, I like to remind myself that I’m far from alone—and King agrees. “I frequently encounter several recurring challenges,” shares King, highlighting that “paper clutter,” a lack of a plan for sorting mail, ineffective filing systems, drawers with a jumble of supplies rather than clearly defined bins to keep tools in, and an abundance of plugs and jumbled cords create common and constant obstacles. Plus, King adds, “The digital desktop often mirrors the physical one, becoming a chaotic landscape of scattered files.”

The Plan

Problems—even big, overwhelming ones—often feel much more manageable with a few key tools that can turn a mess into a system that actually works. And King knows exactly what to add to your office organizing toolbox: “A reliable label maker is indispensable for creating clarity and ensuring everything has its designated place. Drawer bins are fantastic for containing and categorizing loose supplies within drawers. A good set of file folders is, of course, essential for establishing an organized paper management system. A desk protector mat provides a clean, smooth surface that’s perfect for writing, navigating your mouse, and keeping your workspace organized. It creates a defined area for your keyboard, mouse, and pens, ensuring everything has its place. For frequently accessed documents, a clear horizontal filing shelf offers both visibility and accessibility. Lastly, in our tech-driven world, cable ties, an updated high-tech long extension cord, and a wall charger can be a game changer for managing and streamlining multiple electronic connections safely and efficiently.”

The Process

Once you have a few items on hand to put to use, it’s time to dive into the actual organizing process. “The necessary time and energy is often the most challenging initial step for many,” says King, but “the feeling of accomplishment and order afterward is well worth the effort!”

Creating an organized office starts with “taking everything out,” says King. “It might seem daunting, but emptying the space—be it a drawer, a desktop, or even a room—provides a clear picture of the volume of items you’re dealing with.”

Then, King says it’s time to “ruthlessly purge what you no longer need, especially papers, which tend to accumulate rapidly.”

Post-decluttering, it’s time to “categorize your remaining materials into distinct zones,” says King, which includes areas for “mail, important documents, electronics, office supplies, and stationery.” Plan to wrap up your organizing by “labeling drawers and bins,” which King says “is key to maintaining the system you’ve created.”

The Principles

Whether you’re just diving into organizing your space or you’re maintaining a desk and process that works for you, King says to keep four key principles in mind: “prioritize accessibility, establish a mail routine, embrace functionality over perfection, and don’t neglect the digital realm.” Each principle focuses on taking daily steps to keep your organization in place, like having go-to items within reach at all times, making sure to open your mail (I’m guilty of avoiding this!), and deleting unused files from your computer’s desktop to avoid unnecessarily taking up too much space on your hard drive.
