Zooey Deschanel and Jonathan Scott aren’t so much peeling back the curtain on their new home as they are opening its doors.
The “New Girl” star and her “Property Brothers” star fiancé showed off their new New York City apartment to Architectural Digest’s “Open Door.”
The highlight of the residence may be the kids’ nature-influenced bedroom, which Scott called “probably my favorite room in the whole house.” Deschanel is mother to daughter, Elsie, 10, and son, Charlie, 8, with ex-husband Jacob Pechenik.
The room has printed mural tree wallpaper that Deschanel is “obsessed with” and multiple beds with hidden drawers and railings with hand-cut leaves on them.
“When the kids saw it for the first time, they screamed,” she said.
“I do think to myself how special it feels to wake up in a space that feels creative and this exciting. And the kids just absolutely love it,” he added.
The home also features a raised ceiling Scott and Deschanel in the entrance with an arched doorway that he calls “my favorite thing,” while he noted it’s “a tease” for what follows in the rest of the abode.
Indeed, there is plenty more: a mural that Deschanel calls “magical” and “a wonderful start to this apartment we love.” Scott said it draws people in and raises the eye line.
“This place looked absolutely nothing like the way it does now when we first looked at it,” Deschanel said, while adding her first reaction seeing the place was, “Eww, gross.”
Scott said the apartment was vacant for a long time and needed “a lot of love.”
The couple redid the kitchen, which Scott called “the heart of the home,” while Deschanel credited him for his ability to maximize space.
Deschanel pointed out the lack of recessed lighting, instead choosing chandeliers, pendants, sconces and lamps, which she describes as “magical and moody and fun.”
“This is the side effect of being engaged to someone whose father is a world-class cinematographer. The lighting is very important,” Scott said, referring to her father, Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Caleb Deschanel.
The couple also showed off their living room, complete with a hidden TV screen that drops down from ceiling.
“We love a place that feels lush and pretty, but also we want our home to feel lived in and not too stark and austere,” she said.
“We love to entertain, and, frankly, you’re the first person we’ve invited over, outside of family. We haven’t had anybody here yet, so our goal is to entertain a ton,” Scott said.
The home also features a grand piano and a karaoke setup, as well as three private terraces that he says addsa little touch of Los Angeles to the apartment. In addition, there’s a family room that Deschanel calls “cozy” that has a fireplace they added, along with custom furniture.
The master bedroom features a color scheme they both chose, along with embroidered wallpaper and a mattress made by Scott Living, the furniture company he owns with his brother Drew.
“We are so collaborative,” she said.
“She has better taste than I do,” he said. “The entire vibe in this room is peaceful.”
