A popular Sacramento restaurant is making changes to try and keep from closing down completely. Zelda’s Pizza in Midtown is temporarily closing their dining room and bar and transitioning to to-go service only. The family-owned restaurant has been a Sacramento mainstay for more than 45 years. In a Facebook post, the restaurant said they believe this is their best option.“We’re not closing. But we are at that place where we really might have to. So rather than sit on our hands, we’ve decided or felt maybe forced to try something instantly and make some changes, cut back on costs,” bartender Alanna Perry said. “We’re not just going to lock the doors without trying everything and certainly not lock the doors without telling people about our struggle.”Perry said their struggle comes from a combination of things. “Everything. You know, it’s layered. Everything is so much more expensive. And we haven’t raised our prices since 2007,” she said. She emphasized Zelda’s ownership will remain the same. They hope they get enough sales in the next few months to pay all of their bills and reopen the dining room Oct. 6. Long time patrons said they are hopeful the restaurant is able to re-open their iconic dining room again. “It’s just great pizza and people are really nice when you come in. They always treat you like they know you,” Mike Rosa said. “I’m really hoping they open it back up, because that, I think, is an experience a lot of people should have.”“You don’t want to lose an iconic place like this,” Melanie Light said. “There aren’t that many that last this long.”“It holds a special place in our hearts because he brought me here on one of our first dates,” Brenda Murata said. “It’s been a long-time destination dinner outing for us. It’s wonderful.”“I started coming here in the late seventies and met Zelda, and I’ve been coming here ever since,” Craig Murata said. “It has a lot of nostalgia and a lot of feeling for me.”The best way you can help Zelda’s Pizza stay open is to order pizza to-go. They’ll only be taking cash.
