See inside the new Michigan boutique hotel already revitalizing an entire downtown

ROCKFORD, MI — What was once a parking lot is now a centerpiece of Rockford’s downtown revitalization. Hotel Rose, a 54-room boutique hotel, opened its doors this past weekend alongside Char + Barrel, a new upscale steakhouse and bourbon bar.

The $14 million mixed-use development by Wheeler Development Group and AHC Hospitality is more than just a hotel—it’s an investment in Rockford’s future.

“From the moment you walk in to the checkout process, we want every guest to feel like they’re part of something special,” said Jason Wheeler, vice president of marketing and communications at Wheeler Development Group.

Located at 12 S. Main St., the project has already created over 75 full-time jobs, including over 40 in hotel and restaurant operations. The ground level will include additional tenants like Kula Yoga, MudPenny, and Direct Aesthetics set to open in the near future.

Hotel Rose offers a blend of mid-century urban charm with modern touches, designed to reflect the spirit of the 1950s and 1960s downtown core hotels. Room rates range from $179 to $219 per night, and the hotel is already seeing strong bookings following its launch during the Rockford Harvest Festival, according to Wheeler.

The 88-seat steak house and bourbon bar, Char + Barrel, will feature a quarterly rotating menu of seasonal dishes featuring locally procured ingredients. To appeal to a diverse range of guests, AHC has curated a full ledger of spirits ranging from $4 to $900 per shot, Wheeler said.

The opening of Hotel Rose is viewed as a catalyst for downtown growth, both economically and culturally by local officials.

Hotel Rose promises a cozy, elevated and distinctly Rockford experience.

“This is more than just a hotel stay. It’s a full experience of what downtown Rockford has to offer—great food, walkability, charm and community,” said Wheeler.
