Printer FAQs
Hi, I’m Tom Brant. I have more than a decade of experience testing and evaluating consumer tech products like printers, so here are my answers to three of the most frequently asked questions about buying a new printer, especially around a sales event like Cyber Monday.
Will Printer Prices Drop on Cyber Monday?
Yes! However, printers are almost always discounted by 20% or more from their MSRPs. If you see a printer price drop by more than that amount, it’s a good time to buy it. But if not, there’s no special urgency to buy a given printer during a Cyber Monday sale.
We always rate the value of printers based on their MSRPs. So if you find a significant discount, and a high price is one of the only drawbacks of a specific printer, Cyber Monday sales are a great opportunity to buy.

Why Are Laser Printers More Expensive Than Inkjet Printers?
Oftentimes, the cost per page of a laser printer is less than that of an inkjet printer, saving you money in the long run. Actual running costs depend on any number of variables, including how much ink or laser toner you use per page, which may or may not match the amount on industry-standard test pages.
It’s important to note that you can find some very cheap printers nowadays—some under $50—at the bottom of most manufacturers’ product lines. But it rarely makes sense to buy a slow printer with scanty features and replacement cartridges that typically cost as much or more than the printer. It’s smarter to look for printers that will save you money in the long run and check your possible choices against reviews that assess features and cost of ownership, as ours do. (You can check our total cost of ownership guide to decide what’s right for you.)
How Do We Test Printers?
To measure printer performance, we test a variety of factors. One of the most important is speed: We time and report results for a pre-assembled 12-page Word document, a business applications suite, and a 4-by-6-inch photo. After printing each document several times, we average the results.
You can find out more about how we test printers in our explainer article.
