When Katie Davis first saw her space for the 2024 Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas, she immediately envisioned two twin beds flanking the central window. Children’s rooms are one of her favorite spaces to design, so Davis decided to let her imagination run wild and create a fanciful bedroom fit for a kid with design details that the adults would still swoon for. Case in point: the stunning canopy tenting in all four corners of the space that gives the room a sophisticated sense of wonder.

“The fabrics are not super childlike and are still something I would love as an adult, but it’s the fact that they are all layered together that creates an English garden look in the space,” says Davis. “We found this amazing botanical wallpaper from Iksel, which started the layering process for us. Almost every surface is a different pattern, which is a dream for me.”

Above each bed, custom draperies from The Shade Store are adorned with Limehouse Lighting shell sconces that illuminate botanical art by Mary Maguire, whose work can also be found around the rest of the space. A red tolelantern from Coleen & Company Inc. hangs from the tenting like a piece of jewelry. An English Village Lane rug and a host of fabrics from Soane, Lee Jofa, and Sanderson offer plenty of pattern play.

“I never design just to the child’s age,” says Davis. “I think that if it’s a really small child we are going to ensure her bed, rug, drapes, and those big elements are going to grow with her, but we might have a very young pillow or fun bedding that can be swapped out for a plain linen later. This room is definitely more of a sophisticated child’s dream and I want these spaces to be investment pieces you can spend 10 or 15 years in and be happy in.”
