Detroit Foundation Hotel, the former Detroit Fire Department headquarters across Washington Boulevard from Huntington Place in downtown Detroit, has unveiled the renovation of its 100 guest rooms and its Apparatus Room restaurant.
The design update was led by Detroit-based design firm Parini and reflects a deepened commitment to the “regional storytelling and continued hospitality leadership in the heart of downtown.”
“We’re proud to reintroduce Detroit Foundation Hotel to the community that has supported us since day one,” says Michael Kitchen, partner and executive vice president of acquisitions for the Aparium Hotel Group. “As Detroit evolves, so do we — deliberately and creatively, with the city at the core of every decision.”
The guest rooms, including seven spacious Commander Suites, are reimagined with “rich textures, bold palettes of inky blue, and soft pink.” The details are a nod to both Detroit’s industrial heritage and its arts scene, according to the designers.
The Borgman Room, the hotel’s primary meeting space, also has been updated. Outfitted with communal, contemporary furnishings, it now functions as a flexible space for informal gatherings, co-working or brainstorming sessions, or private events.
Moving to the third floor is the hotel’s podcast studio, an amenity that serves visiting creatives and locals alike. One of the only hotel-based studios of its kind, its redesign reflects the property’s commitment to being a platform for Detroit’s storytelling culture, officials say.
The Apparatus Room restaurant reopened with what the designers call a refined new look and a seasonally driven menu from Executive Chef Rece Hogerheide. The space is said to balance preserved history with modern sophistication.
The Parini firm’s updates utilize “moody” lighting, layered textiles, and sculptural contrasts to bring “fresh energy without compromising its soul.”
At the heart of the bar area, the large chandelier remains a focal point, its exposed-element LED lamps and hand-blown glass reimagined to reflect the updated vision. Across the room, a new smoke-like sculptural chandelier anchors the dining room.
Hogerheide’s new menu highlights the region’s seasonal fare through a contemporary lens. It includes a new seated raw bar, spring dishes like the Lobster Radiatore, Moraine Park Farms Dry-Aged Cote De Beouf, and roasted chicken.
