  • Captain’s Galley Restaurant opened in Fort Pierce in 1984.
  • The waterfront restaurant moved to its current location in 1987.
  • When COVID hit in 2020, it created a makeshift outdoor dining room in the parking lot, which it since removed.
  • Now there’s a thatch-covered outdoor dining area facing Seaway Drive and barstools facing Indian River Drive.

A 41-year-old Fort Pierce restaurant recently made a significant change that will allow customers to sit outside in the shade under a thatch-roof covered patio to enjoy the waterfront views and cool weather in the fall and winter months.

Captain’s Galley Restaurant added a wooden deck on the south and east sides of the building last year, but just recently covered both areas to shade the tables facing Seaway Drive and barstools facing Indian River Drive.

The restaurant didn’t have outside seating until COVID hit the Treasure Coast in March 2020. It set up a makeshift outdoor dining area in the parking lot with a temporary canopy and plants surrounding the space, which it since has removed.

The breakfast and lunch restaurant has been in its current location near the South Causeway Bridge since the 1980s.

The late Dennis Horvath and his sister, Deena, opened the original Captain’s Galley Restaurant across from the Fort Pierce City Marina and P.P. Cobb General Store in 1984.

In 1987, Horvath moved and expanded the restaurant to the corner of Seaway and Indian River drives, where it remains today. He ran the eatery with his wife and three children until his death in 2014. His sons, Trevor and Tyler, still run the restaurant.

It’s open every day except Monday for breakfast and lunch. Expect to wait for a table, especially for Sunday brunch. Get the Belgian waffle, but split it with someone to save room for more menu items.
