Top pick

This bed is dead simple to assemble — it takes one person just a few minutes and requires no tools. It can support upwards of 1,500 pounds and offers a lifetime warranty.

Why it’s great

No tools required. We originally worried that securing the wood pieces with only tension and friction would result in a weaker build or cause the bed to squeak and shift around. But thanks to cork padding within the joints and felt padding along the ends of the slats, the Thuma Classic Bed + Headboard holds firm and doesn’t creak.

The joinery structure adds a lovely bit of design detail. Rather than trying to hide the bed’s interlocking attachment points, the lines are visible, which we think adds a nice visual element.

It comes with a lifetime warranty. This usually indicates a quality build, and the Thuma Classic cites a 1,500-pound capacity, far more than the limit for any other bed brand we tested.

Finally, a headboard worthy of the frame. For many years, Thuma offered only the “Pillowboard,” which is little more than a cushion wedged between the head of the frame and a wall. Now, you can get a proper headboard, which adds around $800 to the price, but we think it’s worth it. It fits securely to the frame, elevates the look, and gives you something sturdy to lean on while reading. There’s also a cushioned option, but that adds $200. The cushions are removable for spot or dry cleaning.

One editor who swapped out her Pillowboard with the Classic Bed + Headboard + Cushion told us that the proper headboard “is a huge improvement.” While the Pillowboard was “floppy,” she said, “the headboard has the same sturdy construction as the rest of the bed and makes it significantly more comfortable to lean back on.”

It has material safety certifications. The frame and headboard are certified by Greenguard Gold, which tests for VOC emissions; the cushion is made from CertiPUR-US foam, which is certified to be free of ozone-depleters, certain phthalates, flame retardants, and heavy metals, and low in VOCs. The performance linen on the cushion (if you choose to add it) is Oeko-Tex Class 2 certified, which means the fabric has passed tests for the presence of various harmful substances.

The Thuma’s pieces slot together and stay securely connected without requiring any hardware. Rozette Rago/NYT Wirecutter

Flaws but not dealbreakers

You have to be pretty set on where you put the bed. If you like to rearrange the furniture in your bedroom frequently, this may not be the bed for you. The joinery construction can make moving it a bit of a pain, per one staffer who’s otherwise a big fan.

DIY notes: Assembly is simple, fast, and, dare we say, fun? Expect to spend 20 to 25 minutes if you’re building alone, and even less if you’re working with a partner.
