Edward Meiter was startled Monday morning when he heard an explosive sound from a car crashing through his bay window and landing in his living room, disrupting his home in Caledonia.”I’m sitting over here; you have a fire and watching TV. Obviously, we hear a big explosion,” Meiter said.The crash left about a quarter of the car inside the living room, damaging frames, wood, and irreplaceable items.”I go to go upstairs, ran upstairs and tell Chris, ‘Call 911, there’s a car in the living room.’ He said, ‘What?'” Meiter said.Meiter described the damage to his belongings, including a TV and antiques, as significant.”A TV, a lot of antiques, irreplaceable. The little camera upstairs that got damaged, the chair that sits in the red one, that’s full of glass,” Meiter said.Police confirmed the driver was an 80-year-old from Caledonia, and neither alcohol nor speed was a factor in the crash. They informed Meiter that the driver mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes. The driver was not seriously hurt, though he was initially stunned.”He was stunned. Then the paramedics checked him out and then he went home. He’s at home right now,” Meiter said.Meiter expressed gratitude that no one was injured in the incident.”Thank God it wasn’t cleaning day — because I’d be in that living room,” he said.Police issued a ticket to the driver for failing to maintain control of the car.
